Madebyhandonline.com is the brainchild of two friends from Devon who have brought together a whole community of makers to promote the Craft industry, and sell high quality craft directly to the public - online.
Sarah James is no stranger to makers as organiser of the highly successful Contemporary Craft Fair at Bovey Tracey and Made by Hand in Wales. Formally a maker herself, with a degree in ceramics from Glasgow School of Art, Sarah had wanted to set up a selling website for some time.
With many family members and friends in the making community, former teacher Katie Honnor has always been interested in the story behind craft – the reasons why people create what they do and what inspires them.
We’ve always been passionate about making and buying all things handmade, and bringing beautiful craft into our everyday lives to make it that much sunnier!
We both share a deep interest and respect for the making community and we felt frustrated by how hard it is to buy good quality handmade products – not because they don’t exist but because for some reason they’re not accessible to the public in the same way as the mass-produced. We’re so proud that we did something about this.
We care about the detail in our homes and we’re not the only ones! We all know that using a favourite mug for the morning coffee really does make it taste better and knowing a bit about how it was made and who made it is better still!
Madebyhandonline.com aims to make it easy to buy what you really want. Our collection represents a highly selective mix of the finest makers from UK and Ireland, with an enviable group of jewellers, ceramic artists, furniture makers, textile designers and fashion accessory makers as well as beautiful pieces made from glass, willow, metal and leather. We’re so pleased to be working with so many fabulous makers of contemporary craft and hope you will join us in supporting and promoting their incredible skills.
Our passion for the industry has driven us to do more…this is more than just a shopping site. We’ll be spreading the word about exciting events, exhibitions and employment opportunities and letting people know where they can buy materials and find courses and workshops where they can learn how to acquire these fantastic skills themselves.
Our ambitions for madebyhandonline.com have been welcomed with open arms by the creative community, who are hungry to take success into their own hands and gain the national recognition they so deserve.
